Academic Goals and Program Characteristics

The Ph.D. in International Development Cooperation is a multidisciplinary program with particular emphasis on social, political and economic development and development cooperation. This exceptional program is dedicated to enabling graduates to develop critical thinking, analytical research ability and professional skills on global development concerns including poverty, international development aid and development policies. It is therefore suitable for graduates who are committed to making original contribution in international development either as scholars, at leading think tanks or as development practitioners.
The program is taught by a distinguished faculty with knowledge and vast experience in teaching, researching and consulting on international development with leading global organizations.Through interactive learning sessions covering various specialized professional courses, students are able to conceptualize development theories, scrutinize development challenges and come up with research topics of their interest.

Theory of Economics
This course is primarily designed to introduce the principles of economics in a practical way for those students who have not previously taken any rigorous economics courses. Accordingly, emphasis will be placed on the economic way of thinking, and on practical issues, rather than on mathematical details. After taking this course, it is hoped that the students will understand and be able to develop their own views on economic issues that appear in the news media, albeit rudimentary.

Economics of Development Cooperation
This class introduces various economic analyses on international development cooperation or foreign aid. The two key questions are-What are the critical and fundamental factors for economic development? Can foreign aid contribute to a poor country gaining these factors, and if so, how?

Statistical Analysis
This course is designed for students who have never taken any college level of statistics. The purpose of the course is to introduce the basic concepts of statistics and statistical methods and apply them to the real world.

Econometric Analysis
This course is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge of statistical and econometric methods. However, the class will not go into all of the theories, rather focus on a rich area of economic applications. Thus, emphasis is on intuition, applicability and practices, but not on pure theory. To complete the course, participants have to be familiar with statistical programs like STATA and/or EViews.

Research Methods for Social Sciences
This course discusses the various research methods used for the social sciences. This aims to allow students to understand the principles and (dis)advantages of different methods and to select the appropriate method for a research topic.

Advanced Seminar in IDC (I)
This course aims to provide opportunities to form and discuss ideas related to their research and academic interests in the form of a seminar. Active participation during the discussion and provision of academic input is expected.

Advanced Seminar in IDC (II)
This course aims to provide Ph.D. students with the academic ability to explore a research topic and to develop it into a paper or dissertation. Students can learn and discuss the formulation of research questions, development of a literature review, selection of appropriate research methods, hypothesis testing, and chapter organization.

Aid and Development
This course will facilitate students in thinking deeply about global poverty through discussion, mutual learning and team projects. This course is conducted through student presentations and discussion. The instructor will just guide and moderate the discussion.

Social Survey Methodology
This course is designed for Ph.D. students who plan to write a thesis. The purpose of the course is to provide a broad overview of the many aspects of survey research methodology, which include design of the survey, sampling, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

Development and Social Policy in Developing Countries
This course delivers two benefits: (1) a greater understanding of the factors, policies, and programs that affect growth and social welfare in developing countries; and (2) practice in synthesizing these factors, policies, and programs into a Country Partnership Strategy (CPS).
